Lemon Bay Playhouse to Hold Auditions for “Deathtrap” and “Dear Santa”
In keeping with its new policy to “cluster” auditioning, the Lemon Bay Playhouse will hold open auditions for its next two plays on Sunday, August 26 and Monday, August 27 at 7:00pm at the Playhouse, 96 W. Dearborn St., Englewood. The two plays are: “Deathtrap” by Ira Levin and “Dear Santa” by Norm Foster.
“Deathtrap” will be directed by Peter Ivanov and runs from October 17 through November 4, 2018. It calls for a cast of two female and three male actors for this comedy/mystery/thriller. Peter says that for the auditions the actors should approach the scenes as realism but also play whatever comedy they find in the script. He also provides some background information about the characters that the actors may find helpful when auditioning for that role.
Sidney is sophisticated, acerbic, and wickedly funny.
Myra is also sophisticated but extremely high strung and excitable.
Clifford comes off as rather innocent to start. He is gay, but ruggedly built and in no way effeminate.
Porter is highly intelligent, very nosy, and like everyone in the play except Myra, completely amoral.
Helga is a legitimate psychic who has a strong Germanic accent and is excessively theatrical in voice and body. Though she is comic, her “powers” must be a threat to Sydney.
In this play the seemingly comfortably ensconced in his charming Connecticut home, Sidney Bruhl, a successful writer of Broadway thrillers, is struggling to overcome a dry spell which has resulted in a string of failures and a shortage of funds. A possible break in his fortunes occurs when he receives a script from a student in the seminar he has been conducting at a nearby college — a thriller which Sidney recognizes immediately as a potential Broadway hit. Sydney’s goal is to steal the script anyway possible! Sidney’s plan, which his wife fights him every step of the way, is to offer collaboration to the student, an idea which the younger man quickly accepts. Thereafter suspense mounts steadily as the plot begins to twist and turn with devilish cleverness, and with such an abundance of thrills and laughter, that audiences will be held enthralled until the final, startling moments of the play.
“Dear Santa” will be directed by Bob LaSalle and runs from November 28 through December 16, 2018. It calls for a cast of one young female, one older female, and four male actors.
In this Christmas oriented comedy, Santa Claus has his work cut out for him. Santa tries to fulfill a child’s special Christmas wish while his staff attempts to overcome a supply shortage at the North Pole. This is a laugh-filled holiday play innocent enough for the youngest boy or girl and entertaining enough for adults.
