This lecture discusses the historical background and biographical history of Spain’s Hernando de Soto, one of the most famous of the Conquistadors and his appointment to explore and settle La Florida for Spain. You will follow de Soto’s journey to Florida and his march through the southern area of North America in the 16th century. This incredible journey began at Tampa Bay in 1539 and ended at the Mississippi River in 1543. Instructor is Winifred Roberts who enjoys studying and researching Americanand Native American history. Her enthusiasm grew as she researched her own ancestry. Her main focus is on the Calusa and early Spanish history in Florida. For information or to register, call 941-505-0130.
